Things to do in Baltimore this week 7/9/18

Before we get to all the fun stuff, I need to plug a cause that is close to my heart. As they near the end of their fiscal year on July 31, Single Carrot Theatre is facing a critical shortfall that may mean the end of Single Carrot. If the work Single Carrot has done in the last ten years meant something to you, now is the time that we need you. If you think there is a place in this city for midsized arts organizations, now is the time to act. The future of Single Carrot is quite literally in your hands. We need your help to raise $55,000 by July 31st. We are halfway there! Please consider donating to the Crowdrise Campaign and #SaveSingleCarrot.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming! Plenty of fun going on in Baltimore this week. Lots of cool indoor activities for those of you who want to stay out of the heat. I’ve been wandering down to the Harbor Market for my lunch on Wednesday’s and Friday’s recently and intend to keep it up. I’ve got  brunch dates on Saturday and Sunday. There is no such thing as too much brunch, am I right? I’m attending the 4th Annual Hopped Homebrew Competition on Sunday afternoon to support a friend who is entering a beer. I like supporting my friends when it involves sampling 20+ beers. Good stuff! I hope you can find something good too!

During the artscape weekend, the artist run art fair will take place down the street, offering a vast range of curatorial styles and individual aesthetics, each connected by similar ethos and awareness of one another’s practice. “Based on your Recent Search / More Like This” captures a similar energy and condenses it into a smaller, parallel exhibition.

SEGO w/ Kit & The Chardonnay Boys, Faceless Ones at Metro Gallery
8PM – ?
Metro Gallery
1700 N Charles St, Baltimore
Sego’s Spencer Petersen and Thomas Carroll were both birthed in the burgeoning Provo, Utah music scene. However, finding inspiration in the dissonance that the towering structures and bustling city offers over the mountains and relative quiet of Provo, both relocated to an old pasta factory in downtown LA. Through various projects together, both founding members uncovered their distinct sound: lazy, grungy guitars with digital overlays and refreshingly honest lyrics. The band’s debut album surprises with angular guitars, complex arrangements and musings from an 80’s kid contemplating the void left from the misguided hope of our youth.

Stillpointe Theatre Presents Urinetown: The Musical! Urinetown is an hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Judy and the General
June 29 – July 29, Fri & Sat 8PM / Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Judy and the General is Rosemary Toohey’s hilarious new musical about the biblical Judith and the powerful general Holofernes. Her image is in museums and churches all over the world. Hundreds of artists through the years have depicted a young woman in the act of beheading a bearded general.  It’s not often that women are seen as heroes in the Bible, but among the handful of strong female characters, Judith is a standout. Intelligent, devout and resolute, she ingeniously uses her feminine wiles to outwit the mighty Holofernes, thereby saving her people from destruction. It’s a classic match between the forces of good and evil. The story of a woman who takes it upon herself to save her town from impending destruction, and the indecision of the male dominated leadership!

But she confirms she and her husband and bandmate, Jason Beek, have a passion for studying American music. “We really love to uncover the past. It’s almost like digging for buried treasure,” she says. “For me, that’s where music is at. I like all kinds of music as long as there’s the word early in front of it.” For her new album, Down Hearted Blues, releasing Sept. 22, 2017, on Signature Sounds, they unearthed 12 vintage gems written or made famous by an array of artists both renowned and obscure, from Willie Dixon and Memphis Minnie to Charles Sheffield and Betty James. Then, like expert stonecutters, they chiseled them into exciting new shapes and forms, honoring history while breathing new life into each discovery.
