Things to do in Baltimore this week 7/16/18

This is going to be a fun week here in Baltimore. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of free events being offered this week. I’m for sure going to pop in for KorRYEan: A Haenyo Takeover on Thursday because I love Korean food and Rye is one of my favorite bars. Artscape 2018 is happening this weekend and shockingly the weather forecast is predicting temperatures under 90 degrees. I’ll see you there on Saturday night! Can you believe we are halfway through July? Where is the summer going? Don’t miss out on an opportunity to get out and have a good time in Baltimore!

John Moreland w/ Old Heavy Hands
8PM – 11:30PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
The replay of John Moreland’s network television debut is…glorious and affirming and a sucker punch. He is announced by Stephen Colbert, lights dissolve, and the camera slowly focuses on the person midway across the unadorned stage, revealing him beneath muted blue lights. He is a big man. Seated, alone, cradling his acoustic guitar. He looks like nobody who is famous. Then he begins to sing, to caress the song “Break My Heart Sweetly,” and all that remains is to whisper, “Oh, my god.” In Colbert’s studio everybody stood, like they were in church. Big Bad Luv is the record John Moreland made after, after everything in his life changed. For the better.

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

The Legendary faUSt w/ Bonnie Jones
8PM – 11PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
As Krautrockers, faUSt had a worldwide career. On their first three albums in the early 1970s, they inhabited the vast field from improvisation to bricolage to rock’n’roll with the ease of rogues and the determination of declared sonic renegades. They were big in Britain before the notion of Krautrock had made the rounds in Germany. One can still feel the breathing of this music, the bubbling of this primal soup, in current faUSt pieces, in the stone-age thudding of “Fish”, which faUSt anticipated in 1972 on “Mamie Is Blue”. But you will also be able to distinguish the as-yet- unheard if you allow yourself enough audio time. The sound of a squeaky door from the house of Jean-Hervé Péron, for which the musician has the same kind of enthusiasm others might reserve for a brilliant guitar riff (“gripping, touching”); or the minute-long fadeout of “Fish”, which Zappi Diermaier is so excited about. The only plan is for the band to take off without a plan. “We let the music play through us,” says Jean-Hervé Péron. Everything else is up to the listener, to make his own film. Jean-Hervé Péron has a little tip for us: Listen to the fish.

Sixteen Candles at the Senator
10M – 11:30AM
The Senator Theatre
5904 York Rd, Baltimore
“In which writer/director Hughes reinvented the teen movie by introducing real emotions and anxieties behind the usual run of dating decisions, wild parties and adolescent pranks. Ringwald’s star-making turn plunges her into the trauma of turning 16, when her crush on the class hunk fails to work out and she finds unlikely solace in the shape of Hall’s Ted the Geek. Sly humour and an appreciative ear for the demotic improv of teenage chat completes an attractive package.”

July 20-22, Fri & Sat 11AM – 11PM, Sun 11AM – 7PM
Artscape
Charles Street and Mount Royal Avenue, Baltimore
In recent years, Artscape organizers have applied an overarching theme, relevant to both the arts and Baltimore City, into the festival’s creative thinking. For 2018, we’re going back to the basics…ART and celebrating Baltimore’s pop-up institution, Artscape. For “the year we didn’t have a theme” we encourage artists and festival-goers to embrace Artscape for what it is – a fully accessible, 100% FREE, world-class arts festival – right here in the heart of Baltimore City. New for 2018 – Artscape is proud to shine a light on the creative and artistic talent of Baltimore’s youth, with plans to showcase youth-focused programming (in both the visual and performing arts) on Artscape’s opening day – Friday, July 20, 2018.

Judy and the General
June 29 – July 29, Fri & Sat 8PM / Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Judy and the General is Rosemary Toohey’s hilarious new musical about the biblical Judith and the powerful general Holofernes. Her image is in museums and churches all over the world. Hundreds of artists through the years have depicted a young woman in the act of beheading a bearded general.  It’s not often that women are seen as heroes in the Bible, but among the handful of strong female characters, Judith is a standout. Intelligent, devout and resolute, she ingeniously uses her feminine wiles to outwit the mighty Holofernes, thereby saving her people from destruction. It’s a classic match between the forces of good and evil. The story of a woman who takes it upon herself to save her town from impending destruction, and the indecision of the male dominated leadership!
