Things to do in Baltimore this week 7/23/18

Oh snap, I think I’m attending too many things this week! Brews and Board Games at The Windup Space is this Tuesday. It’s a great opportunity to play games, drink beer, and meet new people. I’m going to try to fit in Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Water Ballet Saturday afternoon followed by the Outcalls Benefit Show! at Single Carrot Theatre that evening. Baltimore Summer Restaurant Week kicks off on Friday! I’ve already made my reservations. I’m going to The Food Market,  Ludlow Market, and hopefully I can squeeze in Myth and Moonshine. On top of all that, BronyCon 2018 is this weekend and I need to do some Brony-watching around the Inner Harbor. I’m going to need a nap after this week is over.

Las Cafeteras w/ Conjunto Bruja
8PM – 11PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
East LA’s political firebrands use their Chicano Afro-Mexican Son Jarocho combined with hip hop, and cumbia, to break down walls. The group’s sound is rooted in the son jarocho of the state of Veracruz, Mexico. A regional folk style that evolved on the West Coast of Mexico, it’s a sound that represents a fusion between Spanish, African, and indigenous musical elements. Highly rhythmic, the primary harmonic instrument is called the jarana. From the same instrument family, the requinto, which looks similar to a ukulele, is plucked with a cow horn pick. Las Cafeteras round out their son jarocho instrumentation with the percussive plucked-key box bass called the maimbol, and scraped donkey jaw-bone called a quijada, as well as percussive dance. While the root of Las Cafeteras’ sound is essentially deep folk music, their take on it is distinctly urban and American, with a showmanship and lyrical bent that is all their own.

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

Judy and the General
June 29 – July 29, Fri & Sat 8PM / Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Judy and the General is Rosemary Toohey’s hilarious new musical about the biblical Judith and the powerful general Holofernes. Her image is in museums and churches all over the world. Hundreds of artists through the years have depicted a young woman in the act of beheading a bearded general.  It’s not often that women are seen as heroes in the Bible, but among the handful of strong female characters, Judith is a standout. Intelligent, devout and resolute, she ingeniously uses her feminine wiles to outwit the mighty Holofernes, thereby saving her people from destruction. It’s a classic match between the forces of good and evil. The story of a woman who takes it upon herself to save her town from impending destruction, and the indecision of the male dominated leadership!
