Taste & Tour at the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion
6PM – 7PM
The Engineers Club
11 W Mount Vernon Pl, Baltimore
During the late-1800s Gilded Age, you needed to secure an invitation from Mary Frick Garrett-Jacobs—a sign that you had been deemed worthy to rub elbows with society’s upper echelon—in order to visit the mansion. Today, however, you don’t need to belong to the upper crust, or even an invitation, to see the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. You just need a ticket. For Mary Frick—often referred to as “Baltimore’s Mrs. Astor”—her lifelong passion project was the Mount Vernon Place mansion that now bears her name. To create the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, she ultimately combined three large rowhomes into one 40-room showcase that featured the work of two prominent architects: Stanford White and John Russell Pope. Sign up for our new Taste & Tour series, during which you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion, learn its history, and enjoy a signature cocktail (September’s will be the Rosemary Lemon Drop) or sparkling water.

The Baltimore Tastemakers Series, an improv show
8PM – 9PM
The BIG Theater
1727 North Charles Street, Baltimore
An interview and comedy show with black people in Baltimore who are making moves. With black performers from BIG troupes including Casually Dope and Cake Walk. Tonight’s guest is artist Ernest Shaw. Ernest Shaw’s work defines the duality of the African American experience, exhibiting this dichotomy through an array of media and concepts. The most prevalent aspect of the artist’s work is his use and understanding of color and the figure. The figure in his work is a continuation of a rich history of African and African American figurative art, and his use of color demonstrates a deep level of understanding of rhythm taught to him by several West African drum instructors. Ernest is a product of Baltimore City Public Schools, where he graduated from the Baltimore School for the Arts—and where he currently teaches. He continued his education with a B.A. in Art from Morgan State University and an M.F.A. from Howard University in Washington, D.C. In addition to teaching in Baltimore City, he is also an adjunct professor at MICA.

Beyond Bach Concert Series: Music of the Gods
4PM – 5:30PM
The Church of the Redeemer, Baltimore
5603 N Charles St, Baltimore
The Bach in Baltimore Orchestra opens its first BEYOND BACH Series Concert: Music of the Gods with Handel’s ebullient Water Music. This spirited and stately work for horns, oboes, bassoon, strings, and continuo is fit for the gods and goddesses atop Mount Olympus. Handel composed it for a concert on the River Thames for King George I. After such royal fanfare, the music will turn fiery and call to mind the Roman God of War, Mars with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Op. 84. Composed during the Napoleonic Wars after Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor in 1804, Beethoven’s blistering work expresses his political outrage over Napoleon’s overreach of power. The “Sturm und Drang” will continue with Mozart’s monumental Symphony 41 in C major or the “Jupiter” Symphony. Mozart’s masterpiece, coined for the Roman God, Jupiter opens with a thunderous clap of strings and horns that builds to a finale of fireworks of breathtaking sound.
