Things to do in Baltimore this week 12/9/19

Hi friends! I just survived my first NIA class at Movement Lab this morning. I’m pretty sure I’ve never sweat so much in my life (or it could have been the 12 Bars of Christmas yesterday?). I was there with the Discover Charm City #galpalfitness group. If you are a lady looking for friends in the city its a good group to connect with. Also Movement Lab is doing a promotion of 30 Days for $30. You can attend one class a day for 30 days to decide if you want to become a member. That is a pretty good deal and can help you kick off you 2020 goals!

Anyways… pretty much a ton of holiday activities going on in Baltimore this week. I’m planning my company party on Friday so I’ll be fairly busy with that until then. Please go have lots of fun for me!

Tonight we’ll record a live episode of the show with MC Schmidt and Drew Daniel of Baltimore-based electronic duo Matmos. Matmos have created a bewilderingly varied body of work, often drawing on samples of unusual sound sources (e.g. a plastic police riot shield) to create music that vibrates in the space between pop and the avant garde. Anyone who’s ever see Matmos perform, or witnessed Schmidt emcee-ing the annual High Zero improvised-music festival, knows that this should be fun. Come hear them talk about three songs that shaped their work, and maybe ask them yourself.

Writers LIVE! Aaron Bobrow-Strain
7PM – 8:30PM
Enoch Pratt Free Library
400 Cathedral St, Baltimore
Taking us into detention centers, immigration courts, and the inner lives of Aida Hernandez and other daring characters, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez reveals the human consequences of militarizing what was once a more forgiving border. With emotional force and narrative suspense, Aaron Bobrow-Strain brings us into the heart of a violently unequal America. He also shows us that the heroes of our current immigration wars are less likely to be perfect paragons of virtue than complex, flawed human beings who deserve justice and empathy all the same. Aaron Bobrow-Strain is a professor of politics at Whitman College, where he teaches courses dealing with food, immigration, and the U.S.-Mexico border. He is the author of White Bread: A Social History of the Store-Bought Loaf and Intimate Enemies: Landowners, Power, and Violence in Chiapas. In the 1990s, he worked on the U.S.-Mexico border as an activist and educator. He is a founding member of the Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition in Washington State. Books will be available for purchase at a signing after the program. Writers LIVE programs are supported in part by a bequest from The Miss Howard Hubbard Adult Programming Fund.

Nov 22 – Dec 15, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Fells Point Corner Theatre
251 S Ann St, Baltimore
The action of She Stoops to Conquer (1773) is largely confined to a night and a day in Squire Hardcastle’s somewhat dilapidated country house. Young Marlow, on his way to meet the bride his father has chosen for him, arrives at the house and mistakes it for an inn. The prospect of meeting the genteel Miss Hardcastle terrifies the diffident youngster; but the serving-girl Kate — in fact, Miss Hardcastle, who chooses not to clarify the misunderstanding — immediately catches his fancy. After a series of trifling confusions and inevitable eavesdropping, all is resolved. A comedy that has been an audience favorite for over 230 years.
