Things to do in Baltimore this week 3/9/20

Hi friends! Lots of fun in store for you this week. I’m using this week to catch up with friends in the area and who are visiting so no events for me. Make sure you check out Queens Girl: Black in the Green Mountains at Everyman Theatre. I saw it on Friday and it was TRULY amazing. This weekend is when we all celebrate unofficial St. Patrick’s Day so I’m sure the bars will be packed. Soak up that alcohol with a biscuit from the Little Fig Vegan Biscuit Pop-up at  Dear Globe Coffee. Don’t forget about The 65th Baltimore St. Patrick Parade and Shamrock 5K Race on Sunday In Mount Vernon. I always stop by to see it since I live down the street.

Representing Baltimore – A Spotlight on Local Creatives
7PM – 9PM
Flatform Studios
2123 N. Charles St, Baltimore
AIGA Baltimore will host the first in a series exploring the need for more diverse representation in the design industry and our city’s creative spaces. Join us at Flatform Studios for a night of inspiring presentations followed by a panel discussion on representation—as it pertains to the unique perspectives of the creative entrepreneur—featuring Jermaine T. Bell, Kaya Gordon-Levi, and Caprece Ann Jackson, and moderated by Charlotte James. We all know Baltimore has a rich cultural heritage of innovation in the arts, music and fashion, largely shaped by the immense contributions of the African American community. Unfortunately, this same community has been disproportionately underrepresented in the professional world of design and many other creative professions. In our commitment to better serve the diverse designers and creators that call Baltimore home, we are honored to shine the spotlight on a few inspiring and insightful African American creatives, giving them an opportunity to present their work, share their thoughts and experiences and spark a dialogue on how we can all influence representation in the design industry.

Your Neighbor’s Story: Lives of New Americans
7:30PM – 9PM
Enoch Pratt Free Library
400 Cathedral St, Baltimore
Refugee. Immigrant. Foreigner. These words flatten human experience and create distance between us. Personal stories, on the other hand, connect us. Finding or losing love, rebelling against a teacher, having a child, fulfilling a dream, fleeing a war. Be it despair or celebration, we share. We identify. We belong. At the intersection of art and activism, Your Neighbor’s Story sees community as the wellspring of change. It braids visual art created by Maryland based artists with the powerful stories of men and women often forced to choose between remaining in the homes they know and love, or saving their families. The artists joined both documented and undocumented new Americans and novelist/journalist Masha Hamilton for lengthy interviews. They then created unique pieces that capture memories, bits that might otherwise be lost. Curated by Maya Fell, the project’s hope is to help erode stereotypes, overcome divisiveness and create not only understanding but friendships. Join us for a conversation and public Q&A with featured artists. Free, no registration required. Seating is first come, first serve.

Hair tells the story of the “tribe”, a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the “Age of Aquarius” living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. Claude, his good friend Berger, their roommate Sheila and their friends struggle to balance their young lives, loves, and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the war and their conservative parents and society. Ultimately, Claude must decide whether to resist the draft as his friends have done, or to succumb to the pressures of his parents to serve in Vietnam, compromising his principles and risking his life.

Volunteering Untapped March Event at The Loading Dock
10AM – 1PM
The Loading Dock, Inc.
2 N Kresson St, Baltimore
Our March event is just around the corner! This month we’re volunteering at The Loading Dock, Inc., a non-profit building materials reuse center! Just picture the scene. Architectural salvage materials. Brick and lumber yard. Miley Cyrus swinging around on a wrecking ball. Alright maybe not that last part. The Loading Dock started way back in 1984, after the founders realized how much waste there is in the building industry. They wanted to see it all re-purposed, and they’ve been succeeding for the past 36 years! Their mission is simple – increase the supply and use of affordable building materials, and improve the community by redirecting landfill-bound, reusable construction debris into productive use.

Catacombs, 100-Year Vendors and History at Lexington Market
10:30AM – 11:30AM
Faidley’s Seafood
203 North Paca Baltimore, Baltimore
Begun in the early 1800s on land donated by John Eager Howard, Baltimore’s iconic Lexington Market holds the title as the oldest market in America. Ralph Waldo Emerson also dubbed it “the gastronomic capital of the world.” During the tour, we will visit Faidley’s, Berger’s, and other vendors that have been in their stall for a century or more. We will also explore the catacombs under the marketplace. Rediscovered in 1951 during the construction of a parking garage, the origins of these tunnels and vaults are mysterious. Were they used for cold storage before refrigeration? Did they house distilleries during Prohibition? We may not get the definitive answer, but we’ll at least get a first-hand look at these spaces that are normally closed to the public. Be sure to bring your canvas bags to do some quintessential Baltimore shopping afterward.
