This weekend is when we all celebrate unofficial St. Patrick’s Day so I’m sure the bars will be packed. It braids visual art created by Maryland based artists with the powerful stories of men and women often forced to choose between remaining in the homes they know and love, or saving their families. The artists joined both documented and undocumented new Americans and novelist/journalist Masha Hamilton for lengthy interviews. They then created unique pieces that capture memories, bits that might otherwise be lost. The Loading Dock started way back in 1984, after the founders realized how much waste there is in the building industry. They wanted to see it all re-purposed, and they’ve been succeeding for the past 36 years! Their mission is simple – increase the supply and use of affordable building materials, and improve the community by redirecting landfill-bound, reusable construction debris into productive use.

Begun in the early 1800s on land donated by John Eager Howard, Baltimore’s iconic Lexington Market holds the title as the oldest market in America. Ralph Waldo Emerson also dubbed it “the gastronomic capital of the world.” During the tour, we will visit Faidley’s, Berger’s, and other vendors that have been in their stall for a century or more. We will also explore the catacombs under the marketplace. Rediscovered in 1951 during the construction of a parking garage, the origins of these tunnels and vaults are mysterious. Were they used for cold storage before refrigeration? Did they house distilleries during Prohibition? We may not get the definitive answer, but we’ll at least get a first-hand look at these spaces that are normally closed to the public. Be sure to bring your canvas bags to do some quintessential Baltimore shopping afterward.

The 65th Baltimore St. Patrick Parade and Shamrock 5K Race

On Sunday, March 15, 2020, the 65th Baltimore Saint Patrick Parade and the Shamrock 5K Race will draw tens of thousands of marchers, runners, and spectators to the downtown area. The Shamrock 5K Race kicks off at 1:00pm at Charles and Mulberry Streets. It will proceed south on Charles to Conway Street, east on Conway to Light Street, south on Light to Key Highway, east on Key to a turnaround point near Jackson Street, a return west on Key Highway to Light Street, north on Light to Pratt Street, east on Pratt to Market Place, and north on Market to the finish line between Pratt and Lombard Streets at Power Plant Live. The Saint Patrick Parade will step off at 2:00pm from the staging area by the Washington Monument, and will proceed south on Charles Street to Pratt Street, and then east on Pratt to Market Place. Parade Day road closures and parking restrictions will begin as early as 9:00am on Sunday. Between 12:00 noon and 5:00pm, you should expect substantial traffic congestion and delays. The sooner you get downtown for the Parade, the lesser your chances of being stuck in traffic.

Learn how to mount a tropical of your choice on repurposed treated wood from Oak Hill Sawmill. We’ll have a variety of low-light and bright-light tropicals to choose from. Whichever plant you choose will be suited to stay on the board for a few years before needing to be replanted. We will be using treated wood that is able to sustain continual watering.
